It is so so so good. Villeneuve has some of the thickest French Canadian speech and mannerisms. He's been constantly made fun of for his English, as well as the fact that he once said something about how movies don't need dialogue. But that's what makes this work, I think. You've nailed it - Sheridan's screenwriting and Villeneuve's direction and atmosphere. Its such a banger.
Love this movie. One of my favorites of the decade for sure. I saw it on an international flight to Australia and couldn’t stop thinking about it. Brilliant filmmaking top to bottom.
"This is kind of the only time it’s happened. After Sheridan made his directorial debut with Wind River, the only film director he’s worked with is Stefano Sollima..."
Umm, you're forgetting Hell or High Water, which was directed by David Mackenzie. Likely his best screenplay after Sicario.
Oh, I have not forgotten about Hell or High Water, which is probably the best thing Sheridan has ever done. But that was before Wind River, and David Mackenzie is no Denis Villeneuve.
Fair point, I could have been clearer about the point I was making. Since Sicario, he hasn’t worked with a director of Villeneuve’s caliber. His second produced script, Hell or High Water, is great, and Sheridan’s voice is so clear and strong in the finished product that it feels like his movie even though David Mackenzie directed it. And it’s a really good movie, but it doesn’t have the flair Villeneuve brings. Mackenzie isn't a visionary. After that, Sheridan made Wind River and then shifted mostly to TV. Since 2017, he’s written two movie scripts he didn’t direct, and they were both directed by Stefano Sollima. Sollima’s good, but he isn’t an A-list director like Villeneuve. And I’d love to see Sheridan work with somebody like Villeneuve again.

Yeah, I mean, would Sicario be improved with more dialogue? Definitely not.

No Australians in the movie, I don't think.

Oh, ok. So you only "dismissed" it because it wasn't made by a "big" director? But I mean Sollima isn't that big either...

Gotcha. That's what I thought. It just seemed odd you wouldn't mention HOHW because I knew you liked it a lot. Thanks for clarifying.
