I’m gonna be honest with you: I have too much other work going on to do a full Dad Shows this week. It’s a good problem to have, but I am disappointed to have to step back for a week. I hope you understand. Since I started Dad Shows a little over six months ago, this is the closest I’ve come to missing a post, and it bums me out. I want to uphold my end of our agreement (you subscribe, I give you words).
I want to mark that six months, though, by saying how much I appreciate you reading. There are so many things on the internet to click on, and it means a lot that you choose to click on me. I hope you enjoy the five or so minutes you spend with me each week, and that you say “nice” when you see Dad Shows in your inbox every Thursday. Thanks for sticking with me and being part of this fun thing I’m trying to build.
So this week is all about you. I’d like to open it up to you to check in. What Dad Shows are you watching? Do you have any requests for Dad Shows you’d like me to write about? Any suggestions for how I can make Dad Shows better? Let me know in the comments, or reply to this email.
Regular programming will resume next week. I’m considering writing about Netflix’s new NBA documentary Starting 5, but would you read that? Dads like sports, but do you?
I’ll sign off with a request: If you’re willing, please share Dad Shows with one Dad (or non-Dad, that’s fine too) you think would like it. Maybe someone who doesn’t usually read TV criticism but might think this is funny. Someone who knows Tulsa King is silly but enjoys it anyway. Those are my people.
Did you ever write anything on "Crime Story"? That seemed like a Dad Show par excellence, complete with Dad Legend Dennis Farina in the lead.

Ok - as a “retro dad” on here - proud of it - I do love this thread. But some of the current “dad” shows out there miss the point for some of us “dads.” Simplicity and purity somehow got lost as the “Dad Show” hit subscriber platforms/longform storylines? - The “Original Dad Shows” and precursors of todays series were created via 80’s/90’s network cheez tv. Nothing is more old-school-dad than “The Black Sheep Squadron” - “Magnum P.I. - even The original “Man From Uncle” —- Just curious as to what elements/motifs… have been passed on for viewers who do retro and do current streaming. - So… “current dad shows” VS some”classics” might be a fun - or not. Always up for looking at the medium short term and long form in order to gain insight.
