Remember when it was announced? It was friggin Frank Darabont making it. It had the same promise of prestige as The Last of Us had. Not to mention that The Walking Dead comic was also seen as something that subverted the genre when it first came out. They really are two sides of the same coin.
You’re absolutely right. Frank friggin Darabont. Sure, Craig Mazin had Chernobyl, but he also made some of the worst movies you’ve ever heard of. The Walking Dead was from the director of The Shawshank Redemption (and perhaps more to the point at that time, The Mist). Did you see that Darabont directed an episode of the upcoming Stranger Things season? We’re approaching a Darassaince.
There's a broader discussion to be had about the quality of video game stories in general. Last of Us (and Uncharted) were so well received because they took elements that made film and TV so compelling and brought it to video games. But bringing it back to TV is a bit like Google translating something from English to Mandarin and then back to English. And don't get me wrong, I like it. I enjoy it. But I think to elevate it to some high water mark of the medium is crazy, which is why I think this season has let so many people down. But I am sure Mazin and Druckmann couldn't have won either way - change it too much, and other people would have gotten upset for other reasons.
But back to TWD - Darabont always understood the assignment. If you go back and watch the pilot of TWD - it's incredible stuff. It's shot great. It's paced great. It's compelling TV. It's pretty close to the comic, but also takes liberties that makes it better for TV. Can't wait for more Darabont! Didn't know about Stranger Things.
That’s exactly what it’s like. It’s not my original observation, but they say that the reason why The Last of Us game is so good is because it reimagined cinematic works - most saliently The Road and Children of Men - into the video game format in a way that hadn’t been done so well before. But when it’s turned back into something cinematic, it’s just another post-apocalyptic show that isn’t as good as Children of Men.
